ARTIST BIO

G̱ilakas'la

Greetings, I’m Cristiano Bruno, better known as Cris, and I’ve dedicated myself to the world of art and carving for over two decades.

My artistic journey unfolds in the vibrant landscapes of Vancouver, British Columbia, where I’ve set up my creative sanctuaries since 1997.

My artistic philosophy revolves around injecting unique narratives and profound meanings into my creations, making each piece a memorable and distinctive work of art. I firmly believe that art should be a mirror to the soul, reflecting stories and emotions that resonate with people from all walks of life.

My artistry extends its reach far beyond the boundaries of Vancouver. You can find the masterpieces of LIVING INDIGENOUS ART West Coast Hand-Made Jewelry gracing the walls of galleries not only throughout the Lower Mainland but also in countries far and wide. This global recognition is a testament to the universal appeal of my creations, transcending borders and cultural boundaries.

My journey as an artist has been an odyssey from East Vancouver to the picturesque landscapes of Southern Italy, specifically Calabria, Cosenza, where my life began.

It was in this enchanting setting, steeped in the rich tapestry of art, music, and culture that my artistic spirit was kindled. I found myself sketching and drawing the historical monuments of Cosenza, which served as my first canvas and muse.

However, my destiny changed when I returned to Vancouver at the tender age of 15. Here, I was introduced to the profound legacy of my family, renowned globally for their cultural designs and the art of crafting precious metals and totem poles.

My Uncle Charles Harper, a Master Carver of the Carrier Nation who had apprenticed under the great Lloyd Wadhams in the 1970s, took me under his wing. He nurtured my budding talent and initiated me into the intricate world of precious metals and the artistic heritage of my family for generations.

In this artistic journey, I fell in love with a new art form, engraving.

This enchanting medium became my passion, and I progressed with astonishing speed, all while embracing the unique lineage of my background, the Kwakiutl First Nation, which traces its roots to Alert Bay in ‘Namgis Territory, where my mother hails from.

Over 26 years, I’ve honed my craft as an engraver, and my love for this art form continues to burn brightly. I’m a perpetual student of my culture, exploring new horizons, discovering innovative approaches, and nurturing my roots.

I dream of opening a gallery that showcases not only my work but also the artistic legacy of my family, a space where art and culture intertwine, bridging the past and the future.

Throughout my years of learning and creating art, I embarked on an unexpected journey by joining the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 21. While upgrading my high school education, I discovered a brochure about the military, which sparked a desire in me to embrace the challenge, especially since many around me doubted my potential.

I joined the Raven Aboriginal Program, an all-Indigenous Basic Naval Qualification program based in Esquimalt, Victoria, B.C.

Upon completing my basic training in the Navy, I received a call from the British Columbia Regiment, Duke of Connaught’s Own Rifles which is an Armored Reconnaissance Regiment, which I had been considering.

I joined the BCR’s, redoing my Basic Military Qualification to adapt to the Army’s requirements.

Over the years, I achieved various qualifications, including the Soldier Qualification (SQ) and advanced to the rank of Private Trained and than to the rank of Corporal through my DP1 and DP2 courses. I nearly completed my Leadership Course to attain Master Corporal rank but had to cut my training short due to a back injury while stationed in Wainwright, Alberta.

Later, I participated in a domestic operation supporting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games on Cypress Mountain, patrolling in collaboration with the RCMP.

Unfortunately, personal circumstances led me to leave the military, but I cherish my 13 years of service with the Canadian Armed Forces.

The CAF has profoundly shaped who I am today, and I am deeply grateful for the experience and lessons learned.

In closing, I acknowledge the profound blessings bestowed upon me by the Creator, and my heartfelt gratitude goes out to my family members of the Matilpi, Wadhams, Harper, and Seaweed lineages.

They have been my mentors and guides, imparting the wisdom of precious metals and our family’s cultural designs.

Together, we continue to paint the canvas of life with the vibrant colors of art and tradition, creating a legacy that will stand the test of time.
